Most Airlines offer compensation, especially if the scheduled flight is overbooked or the next available flight is until the next day. However, the Airline follows several rules and regulations. Travelers should know the basic terms and conditions that make them eligible to claim compensation if the flight is overbooked. However, the compensation must include a hotel booking for long-flight travelers and more.

  • If the Airline has denied boarding due to an overbooked flight, the passenger is entitled to compensation, including a full or partial refund or a return flight.
  • If you fail to board the overbooked flight, the Airline is entitled to issue a new ticket to your arrival destination; however, this is subject to seat availability.
  • During long delays, passengers are liable to receive compensation for meals, refreshments, and access to communication, including calls and emails.
  • Suppose the next flight is available the next day. The Airline is then responsible for providing overnight accommodations, arranging a stay in hotel rooms, and providing transportation to and from the Airport.
  • If the Airline offers an alternative flight in a higher class than the one you booked, you don't have to pay an additional payment. However, if the class of the alternative flight is lower, you can get a reimbursement between 30% and 75% of the ticket price you paid.

What is an overbooked flight?

An overbooked Flight means selling more tickets than the seats available on the flight. Airlines are allowed to do this to make more profit; however, they know that it is unlikely all passengers won't show up at the Airport, which may increase the chances of a show between 5% and 15%.
